Notes:
Author as shown: [anon] = no author identified; [anon: name] = author implied in text; names consisting only of initials or of a first name and final initial are not inverted (i.e., A. S. R. remains A. S. R.; Mary E. appears as such)
Author: Whenever possible, the authors behind pseudonyms have been identified. ? indicates doubt about the attribution. An index by author is also online, as is biographical information about some of the contributors.
Title: When the editor indicated material was taken from another source, that information is included with the title; [frontis] indicates the frontispiece was the illustration for the story or article. (In many cases, such material appears to have been created to accompany a frontispiece.)
Genres: art = article, essay, or non-fiction piece; col = regular column; fil = filler (short item, usually 1-2 paragraphs); mus = music; p = poem; rpt = reprint (material the magazine identified as reprinted from another source; many other items were reprints, but not identified as such in the magazine); ser = serial (used only for material spanning a year or more); ss = short story (includes multi-part works); trans = translation
Reprint information: In 1852, in "A Case of Plagiarism," Richards complained bitterly that the gift book The Forget-Me-Not for 1852 (copyright 1851) took "more than half the contents . . . from the Schoolfellow" (emphasis in original), in some cases altering titles or omitting names of authors; in all cases, omitting any mention of prior publication in his magazine. Later, he learned that one of his contributors (unnamed) had sent issues of the magazine to the editor, with permission to use any of her pieces that seemed appropriate. Instead, the editor had apparently selected freely from the entire magazine. Since Forget-Me-Not is available online and early volumes of Schoolfellow are not, links to the appropriate pages are included, identified as FMN. In the case of multi-part stories, only the first part contains the link.
Additionally, several of Cornelia H. Richards's stories were later incorporated into her Pleasure and Profit; or, Lessons on the Lord's Prayer (1853) as chapters. Occasionally, story titles were altered, although frequently the magazine illustrations were retained (as with "The Mother's Prayer" and "Give Us This Day"). Again, links to the appropriate pages are included, identified as P&P. Many of Richards's other pieces (primarily those published under her Mrs. Manners pseudonym) were reprinted as chapters in At Home and Abroad; or, How to Behave (1853), usually under their original titles. That volume is also online at Google Books (table of contents). And Sedgemoor, the serial that spanned almost two years' worth of issues in 1854-55, was also reissued as a book. (Online at Google Books.)
The entire 1854 volume is also online at Google Books. Another copy, with some covers (showing Tables of Contents) is online at HathiTrust. "The Story of an Egg" from that volume, advertised as "Translated from the German," actually appears to be from a British work, What is an egg worth?, or, The Blessings of Providence, published anonymously in 1839. (Online at Google Books.) It was reprinted in the London Journal in 1841, complete with illustrations from the original -- the same illustrations that appear in Schoolfellow. (Chapter one in the London Journal, with two illustrations, via Google Books; chapter two, with another illustration, again via Google Books.) The 1855 volume is online at HathiTrust.
Pagination error in the 1852 issue: The June issue duplicated some page numbers from May (running from 145 to 76 instead of 164-92; the July issue resumed with the correct number (193). Page numbers for June in this listing correct the numbering.
Information about contents of issues after January 1856 is from newspaper advertisements for the periodical. "item-" indicates the order of articles as shown in the advertisement.
Additional information about Schoolfellow can be found at Pat Pflieger's American Children's Periodicals
