Volumes in this series contained short stories based on legends (romances). In 1912, volumes 1-3 were reissued in a two-volume set as Romance of the French Chateaux: Feudal, Renaissance, Bourbon. The final three volumes (8-10) were co-authored by the Champneys' son, Frere Champney.
